Eberhard Bock - German pilot of JG3

The time was 1:13 p.m., the altitude was about 22,000 feet and the coordinates were 48°20"N - 12°50"E. They were just three minutes from reaching their target. The German pilot, believed to be the one who shot down the "Gallopin' Ghost," was Oberleutnant (1st Lt.) Eberhard Bock. He was an instructor pilot in a combat training wing and shot down 28 aircraft during World War II. Bock was born in 1917 and killed in action on May 28, 1944. "...Eberhard Bock was assigned as a Leutnant in 3./JG 3 May 1940. He won his first victory in aerial combat on 15 May when an MS 406 abat near Charleroi. When the campaign ends in France, it has 4 victories to his credit. During the Battle of Britain, Bock wins 4 new victories, making him one of mielleurs pilots of I. / JG 3 in this period. On 1 September 1940, Bock was promoted Oberleutnant Staffelkapitän of 3./JG 3. However, on 2 December 1940, after a free hunt mission over England, Bock ran out of fuel and must make a forced landing with his Bf 109 E-7 (W.Nr. 4131) Cadzand, fortunately, the bond side of the Channel.

At the end of 1940, its total wins to 8 devices. Bock led the 3./JG 3 on the Eastern front at the start of Operation Barbarossa. On 24 June 1941, Bock takes part in a mission in the sector Luzk. His Bf 109 F-2 (W.Nr. 5477) "Yellow 3" is affected by the DCA which damages the fuel system. It must make a forced landing behind Russian lines, but he managed to escape and returns to his unit the next day with a few minor injuries. Bock won his tenth victory on 29 June, shot down a bomber near Pe 2 Wielka. Twelve days later, on July 10, he recorded his 20th victory shot down a twin-engine bomber Il-4 and V-11 (probably an IL-2) ground attack. On 10 August 1941, 1./JG 3 and 3./JG 3 undertake a mission in the area of Kiev. Training German intercepts a group of 6 I-17 devices, three 16 and I-5 Pe-2 bombers. During the battle that is committed, the Bf 109 F-2 (W.Nr. 6818) Bock is damaged, requiring a new landing on the ground Vassilkov without injury.

The I. / JG 3 was sent to rest in Germany in early October. Bock account then 21 wins to his credit. Based in Magdeburg in Germany, I. / JG 3 begins his conversion on Bf 109 F-4. Bock leads the 3./JG 3 Katwijk in Holland on 12 December 1941. Operations along the Dutch coast resume December 15. On 15 January 1942, 3./JG 3 was redesigned 6./JG 1. Bock won a double victory during Operation Donnerkeil, to evacuate the warships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau and the cuirass Prinz Eugen pocket for them to shelter in the Norwegian fjords on 12 February 1942. On 21 August he was rewarded by the allocation of the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold.

Bock is removed from the front lines after the death of his brother. It is then used to 2./JG 104, an operational training unit based in Herzogenaurach-Fürth. Qu'instructeur well, he managed to win new victories against 3 of the USAAF bombers, a B-17 shot down on 17 August 1943 near Hanau, a B-24 shot down on 22 February 1944 near Obertraubing and another B - 24 killed on February 25 near Hienheim. On 2 May 1944, Bock was assigned as Staffelkapitän of 5./JG 27. He won his last two victories (27 and 28) on 12 May 1944 when abat 2 B-17 of the USAAF as Herausschuss. Bock was shot and killed 16 days later, on 28 May 1944 in aerial combat with P-51 near Helmstedt. He managed to drop his camera BF 109 G-6 (W.Nr. 441 324) "Black 6" but it is killed by his unit who struck.
Eberhard Bock was the holder of 28 victories (sources vary between 23 and 30 victories). Thirteen of his victories were achieved in the East and 15 in the West at least 5 heavy bombers...."
