C. Kay Stowell, C-47 pilot, MTO
From the Facebook posting of: Hill Aerospace Museum
tleSps13o eohgnsoredrrs · It is with sadness that we announce the passing of long-time Hill Aerospace Museum volunteer, C. Kay Stowell. Kay was the last World War II veteran to volunteer at the museum. The greatest generation. Kay Stowell was a 27-year Air Force and Army veteran. He served in the Army Air Corps as a C-47 Skytrain pilot. The Skytrain was widely used by American and British forces for aerial transport during World War II. Stowell supported aerial drops of paratroopers and cargo, evacuated wounded service members, and flew VIP’s throughout the war. “What touched me the most happened after Germany surrendered. We had the honor of flying U.S. infantry troops in an aerial tour over the Italian battlefronts that they had courageously fought through,” said Stowell. Stowell believed that the military provided him with great values like discipline, obedience and respect for his country and flag. “I have passed this respect for the flag and our country to my family,” said Stowell. In 1953, Stowell transferred to the U.S. Army and was involved with the Idaho National Guard where he was also a pilot for many years. Kay served as a member of the Combined Veteran's Honor Guard until the age of 95. He officiated at more that 1,000 military veteran burials. Kay was selected as a "Pioneer in Blue" by the United States Air Force. His portrait hangs in a hallway at the Pentagon. https://www.standard.net/announcemen...9340976c9.html https://www.veterans-in-blue.af.mil/...5/kay-stowell/ https://books.google.com/books?id=us...-47%22&f=false
