AVM John Thornett Lawrence Battle of Britain RIP

Dear all,

I have seen that Air Vice Marshal John Thornett Lawrence has recently passed away.
He flew Blenheim's with 235 Squadron during the Battle of Britain and had a distinguished career after that.
My sympathies to his family.

You can find his obituary here.

As 235 Registrar, was aware of John in 1989 then a young 27 year old, after Aubrey Lancaster put me in touch, unfortunately John declined to correspond.
Best regards
Andy Bird

Registrar 235 & 248 Squadron

Re: AVM John Thornett Lawrence Battle of Britain RIP

Hi Andy,

Sorry to hear that he declined your request.
I corresponded with him 5 or 6 years ago and he was kind enough to let me visit him a few times.
He described his part in the BoB as a small part of a long career and didn't understand the interest in it.
I also tried to encourage him to join the BoB fighter Association but he had no interest in doing so.
The Obit has got a date wrong. The incident that they describe as happening in November 1941 actually happened in November 40.

Regards
Gerry
