ID of insignia on He111 & possible KG4 crash in Holland

Hello,

Can anyone ID the insignia (looks like a human figure, possibly with a gun) on this probable KG4 (5J code?) He111 force-landed, probably in the Netherlands during the early days of the western campaign, possibly even May 10, 1940? The white? prop spinners suggest 1, 4 or 7 Staffel but the insignia is unknown to me. Does anyone recognize this crash-landing, and/or have info on the ID of the insignia? According the the caption it was shot down by flak.

Thanx,

Are both pictures of the same aircraft?
The coats and gloves of the Germans suggest autumn/winter.

Hello,

I now know that this was the well-known 5J+GH of 1./KG54 SD in Poland on 9/3/39. The strange image on the fuselage does not appear on other photos of the front of this plane, so it could be nothing more than a shadow or an oil stain.

Regards,

Hi, Larry...

I take it in your reply, where you mention 1./KG54, you meant 1./KG4.

You may already have seen the undernoted, but for those who haven't, I believe all of these are the same machine, given the bullet strikes and slight damage around the wing-to-fuselage fairing.

All but the first photo are from e-bay auctions, the links to which were kindly supplied by Peter Evans over on LEMB in recent weeks. The first is almost certainly also from e-bay, but from some time ago.

Regards,

Paul

Sorry, I couldn't help myself - quote from Mel Brooks' 'Blazing Saddles'.
