was Josef "Pepi" Jennewein a member of 2./JG 26?

Hi,
It is often said that Lt.Josef "Pepi" Jennewein JG 51 (RK), after pilot training was a member of 2.Staffel JG 26.
Can anyone confirm or refute this claim?
Thank you very much
Tony

Never seen the association with JG 26, but he was with 4.(Eins.)/Jagdfl.Sch. 5 for a time in the fall of 1941 in France, the same general location.

This information comes, for example, from the Luftwaffe Officer Career Summaries (Henry L. deZeng IV and Douglas G. Stankey) and the Kracker Luftwaffe Archive.

Re: was Josef "Pepi" Jennewein a member of 2./JG 26?

It looks like Josef Jennewein was an ace while flying with 4/(Ein)JFS 5 before heading East with JG-51. He claimed three Spitfire on September 20,1941 and a Blenheim and a Spitfire on October 15,1941. All from Tony Wood's list.

BTW the combat on September 20,1941 was a case of gross over-claiming by the Luftwaffe Seven Spitfires were lost in action versus over 30 claims by JG-2,JG-26 and Jadgflieger Schule 5. JFS 5 alone claimed 10 Spitfires and Hurricanes!

Re: was Josef "Pepi" Jennewein a member of 2./JG 26?

Hi,
I have one more doubt.
1.3. 1941 after an air battle crashed while trying to make an emergency landing Fw.Josef Jennewein 10./JG 51 in Caffiers.
Bf 109 E-4 W.Nr. 2056 80%

It's probably another man because:
At the beginning of 1941 "Pepi" Jennewein was still at the 2.Staffel JFS 5 in Wien-Schwechat.
When flying at 4. (Eins.)/JFS 5 at the end of the summer of 1941, he had the rank of Uffz.

Re: was Josef "Pepi" Jennewein a member of 2./JG 26?

I've already found it, they're two different pilots.
There is probably a mistake in the name of JFV Teil 4 / II (Prien, Stemmer, Rodeike, Bock) on page 108 is written Fw. Josef Jennewein.
In publication: Les pertes de la chasse de jour alemande en France Volume 2 1941 (P.Watteeuw) on page 30 is written Fw.Günther Jennenwein.

Re: was Josef "Pepi" Jennewein a member of 2./JG 26?

There was a book published on Jennewein in 1943, which is surprisingly detailed, soft cover about 50 pages and one of a series on fighter pilots.
Title is Jennewein by Walter Konig published by Hans Arens Verlag, and is no 5 in a series of at least 38. Judging from the list on the rear cover of the book the first four were on Molders, Oesau Wick and Phillip, out of a total of 38 listed Hans Arens the publisher wrote three himself, on Barkhorn Hartmann and Herget. The book notes the combat on 20 September was his fourth enemy flight and his first combat. Notes 15 October combat was fifth enemy flight and notes Jennewein was shot up and damaged. Notes he joined 2/JG 51 on 27th February 1942.

Does anyone know much about this series of books?

Russell

As Russell mentioned, Jennewein is the subject of volume 5 in the series "Unsere Jagdflieger". I have two of these volumes, namely the ones on Oesau and Jennewein, both of which show up occasionally on eBay and the book search engines. However, I've never seen any of the other 36 volumes available anywhere, which is a mystery...

Regarding the Jennewein volume:
The first half of the book focuses on his upbringing and his successes as a world champion Alpine skier.
Being a wartime publication, its description of his Luftwaffe service is a bit wanting as a reference (e.g. all place names are abbreviated to one letter), but I was able to glean the following details:

Winter 39 - Started flying training.
Jan 10 40 - Assigned to 1. Fl.-Ausbildungsregiment 72.
??? ?? 40 - Transferred to an A./B.-Schule. Flew Klemm, Stieglitz, Kadett and Arado trainers, and a Fw Weihe.
Aug 25 40 - Got his B II-Schein.
Feb ?? 41 - Promoted to Unteroffizier, started fighter training.
May ?? 41 - Jagdfliegerschule 5 relocated to France.
Sep 20 41 - First combat, 3 Spitfires claimed. [Feindflug #4]
Sep 25 41 - Awarded EK II.
??? ?? 41 - Awarded EK I.
Oct 15 41 - Spitfire + Blenheim. Own aircraft damaged, but able to land safely even while being shot at. [Feindflug #5]
Oct 29 41 - Observation balloon.
Feb 27 42 - Assigned to 2./JG 52.
May 01 42 - Promoted to Feldwebel. [10 victories, 30 Feindflüge]
Jul 27 42 - Awarded Frontflugspange in Gold & Ostmedaille. [17 victories, 117 Ff.]
Jan 18 43 - 5 Pe-2s. Promotion to Oberfeldwebel. [162 Ff.]
Feb 22 43 - 1 fighter + 2 Il-2s
Feb 23 43 - 4 Pe-2s + Il-2
Feb 24 43 - 2 Il-2s (morning), 2 fighters + 3 Il-2s (afternoon)
Mar 27 43 - [46 victories, 204 Ff.]
Apr 12 43 - Awarded Deutsches Kreuz in Gold.
May 07 43 - 5 bombers [222 Ff.]
May ?? 43 - Pe-2
May ?? 43 - 2 La-5
May ?? 43 - Il-2
May 22 43 - 3 fighters
Jul 13 43 - 2 fighters
Jul 14 43 - 2 fighters
Jul 17 43 - 3 fighters [69 victories]
Jul 18 43 - 2 Il-2s
Jul 20 43 - 2 fighters
Jul 21 43 - 1 fighter + 4 Il-2s
Jul ?? 43 - 3 aircraft [victories #83, #84, #85]
Jul 27 43 - Il-2 at 11:25 AM, then MIA. Fw Gabl heard him say via radio that his engine was failing. [Feindflug #271]
Dec 05 43 - Awarded Ritterkreuz. Promotion to Leutnant (effective Jul 1 43.)

Hope that helps,
Leon Venter
