Sardinia claims- Johann Pichler- German flak
I am interested in two claims by German forces on Sardinia in June 1943- as usual my information comes from “Mediterranean Air War: Vol 4.
The first is a claim of a P-38 by Oberfeldwebel Johann Pichler on 24 June East of Montresta. The second is a 22 July 1943 German Flak claim of two P-40s at Siliqua. If anyone has further information on either of these claims, or recommended sources, I would greatly appreciate it. |

Re: Sardinia claims- Johann Pichler- German flak
Can you please explain why you're so interested in these claims ?
As you can see in MOW4 book, the air battles over Sardinia in summer 1943 see heavy overclaiming: On 24 June 1943: 20 Axis claims, 5 P-38 losses On 22 July 1943: 12 Axis claims, 2 P-40 losses |

Re: Sardinia claims- Johann Pichler- German flak
And are you interested in the Germans who claimed or in the Allied aircraft brought down?

Re: Sardinia claims- Johann Pichler- German flak
Interested in the allied aircraft shot down. Namely three pilots, Conn (P-38 24 June) and Boone and Miller from July.
Statements I have encountered about Conn's loss was that it was likely shot down over land, and if that is true, it was the only such American P-38 loss over land on that day. Similarly Pichler's claim is the only one that lists a location definitely over land, the rest are either over water or at best, in close vicinity to water. I am trying to learn more about Pichler's claim if possible. The July is more speculative considering the large number of P-40s claimed by Italian fighters. However, Boone and Miller were last seen taking evasive action in flak and two P-40s were claimed by German flak. Then again the pilots could have easily escaped the flak and been shot down elsewhere. Hope that helps. |
