Claims for a Do 217 22 December 1942

Two Do 217s were lost this day on Pirate attacks. One was shot down by 486 Sqn off the Isle of Wight but another was apparently shot down by flak off Great Yarmouth. Can anyone confirm the latter-the only mention I have is in the book "Air Raid!" by Michael Bowyer

Re: Claims for a Do 217 22 December 1942

The HO Key Points report gives that on the morning of the 22nd Great Yarmouth suffered extensive damage as result of H.E's oil and phosphorus bombs. Slight blast damage was sustained at the key point Factory Grout and Co. Ltd. Notes I had says one aircraft was hit by AA over Yarmouth at 0927 hrs and crashed half a mile off Caister-on Sea no indication whether it was the I/KG2 or the II/KG40 Do 217 lost this day . If I/KG2 were operating from Gilze Rijen would Yarmouth be their likely target ?

Re: Claims for a Do 217 22 December 1942

Brian: Many thanks. There were 9 Do 217s operating at 3 different locations that morning with the two losses. I./KG 2 was at Gilze but II./KG 40 was at Soesterberg. No clues as to which Geschwader was operating where

Hi Chris

I see that Ulf Balke says the second aircraft lost was from II./KG 40 but does not say how or where.

That is the problem-an aircraft from each Geschwader but no idea where
