9./KG 76 18 Aug 40

Ofw Wilhelm-Friedrich Illg, BO to Oblt Hermann Magin, managed to fly their Do 17 back to St Omer after Magin was mortally wounded by ground fire attacking Kenley. 3 questions-did Illg land wheels down at St Omer or crash-land (Alfred Price says former, Jochen Kaiser latter) or Norrent Fontes (Bergstrom-Magin's place of death is said to be Rely/Norrent Fontes) and were the other crew members Sd Fhr Georg Hintze plus one (Price) or Fw Willi Henke (BM) and Uffz Hans Strahlendorf (BF) (Kaiser)

Re: 9./KG 76 18 Aug 40

Chris,

Accounts differ. I show it thus:

9./KG76 Dornier Do17Z. Hit by AA fire and attacked by fighters during low-level attack on Kenley and pilot mortally wounded 1.20 p.m. Aircraft brought under control by navigator and flown back to forced-landing at Norrent-Fontes. FF Oberlt Hermann Magin severely wounded - admitted to hospital in Amiens where died same day, BO Oberfw Wilhelm-Friedrich Illg, BF Uffz Hans Strahlendorf, BM Fw Willi Henke, and Sonderführer Georg Hinze (of Lw.Kr.Ber.Komp.4) all unhurt. Aircraft F1+JT damage state not recorded.
