Transport flight (Ju 52) to Tunnis - 7th May 1942
Good morning to all members.
I do have an entry for a Ju 52 (transport flight) on the 7th May 1942 to Tunis (take off Flugplatz unknown). Is there a record of the sorties and units that flew from Italy or Sicily to Tunis that day? I do not have the MED AT WAR "Opus" at hand now, just to cross-check. What seems strange is that the unit recorded was Transportgeschwader 6 (maybe wrongly note for KGZbV 600 ?). There is NO T.G. 6 as far as I know or have researched... Any tip or known data, most welcomed. A. |

Do you have the right year? Tunisia was still Vichy French (neutral) territory then.

Re: Transport flight (Ju 52) to Tunnis - 7th May 1942
Nick,
I acquired two images (one portrait of an Uffz) and a Bf 109 F from III/JG 52. With those images there was what looked like a nice card-board with the "Historical" activities of this probable Uffz. He would have flown in September 1939 with KG 1 (3 Feindflüge), then from 20/2/40 up to November 1940 another 8 sorties with same unit (both He 111). Then from 25/11/40 up to 7th May 1942, some 33 sorties with seems KG 126 (or KG 26). Then on 7th May 1942, 2 sorties on a Ju 52 (Transportgeschwader 6!!!!) to Tunis (yes the date is that). Then from 8th May up to 19th October 1943, he would have flown another 138 sorties with Ju 88 on the Russian Front. This airman later transferred to the Jagdverband and obtained 21 aerial victories. Total flying hours on Bf 109 G and Fw 190 was 391 hours 17 minutes. I believe that: 1) It is either a FAKE addendun to the images (although the card-board seems to have been cut from an Album with those special boards to add photographs); 2) Or the airman wrote wrongly some of the units he flew. I passed that image to Herr Bernd Barbas, but he was unable to ID the airman....or an airman who may have flown with JG 52 coming from KG 1 and KG 26 previously. JG 5 may be a possible unit, since it is written that this airman also flew Fw 190....but again, we do not have a match for a 21 aerial victories pilot who may have flown previously on He 111 and Ju 88.... So a mistery... |

Re: Transport flight (Ju 52) to Tunnis - 7th May 1942
A man having flown close to 200 bomber missions before transfering to a JG unit and scoring 21 victories would probably not have gone unnoticed so far.... so I suspect either a fake document or putting together real documents belonging to several men.
As for German Ju 52 going to Tunis in 1942, I can see two possible reasons: 1) picking up German shipwrecked men who ended in Tunisia after being sunk off its coast 2) bringing in or out members of Axis armistice check teams, who were active in North Africa |

Re: Transport flight (Ju 52) to Tunnis - 7th May 1942
Laurent,
I do agree with you...all information points me to a "fake" document, sadly. Junker: I wish I had one name that could possibly matches. Here is the link to the image: https://www.luftwaffe-research-group...e-n-c-o.27527/ I was searching amongst JG 52 but was informed that JG 5 also could be possible (late in the war). Surely a 21 victories fighter pilot would not have passed un-noticed, I do agree...this is why I believe it could be a fake document, in spite of it's looking like original. A. |
