Hello,

Currently on ebay is a photo of a Gotha G.IV. The serial is difficult to see clearly but may be 238 making Gotha G.IV (SSW) G.238/17 a possibility.The photo is at:

Alternatively do any of the French users of this board (or indeed anyone else) have any knowledge of a Gotha G.IV exhibited at Nancy?

shot down by Guynemer and André Chainat, 8 february 1917, Kagohl 2. Crashed at Bouconville (100 km NW of Nancy), crew taken prisonier

Thanks for the assistance and the link. So not actually even a G.IV, nevermind G.238/17. The aircraft is one of the rarer G.III and even though I shouldn't try to decipher the serial after the last epic failure, I guess what we're seeing is in fact G.38 with a missing last digit. Presumably, if at the time the French were able to identify the type, the serial may have been known too. Has the record of this survoved as far as you're aware?

The serial was 377/16, as can be seen on the rudder (last picture of the link). The rudder was preserved and is in a small museum near Epinal. Pilot was Offizierstellvertreter Richard Krone, deceased one day later. The victory was officially given at Guynemer, but it seems that almost all work was done by Chainat, generating some skirmish between the two pilots. Chainat was sent at a "morale recovery" hospital,transferred to the technical service (Staé) and never returned to the front.

A further question. Was all of Kagohl 2 based at the same location? It may have been, but could the various Kastas within Kagohl 2 have been based at different places. Also, since we're on the subject, is it known which Kasta operated G.377/16?

Since posting I've looked in Peter M Grosz's Gotha! This says on P.3 that Kagohl 2 was based at Freiburg. So I guess all Kastas were based at the same location. I still would like to know which Kasta G.377/16 came from though

According to "Deutsche Bomber im ersten Weltkrieg" (Jörg Mückler, Motorbuch Verlag, 2017), Kagohl 2 operated from Metz-Frescaty in February 1917. Freiburg was the headquarters location, but the airfield was a well known target for the French (only a fighter squadron remained here), and the training flights with the Gotha G III were done at Neu-Breisach (Neuf-Brisach) not far from Freiburg.
