Anyone know the details of the deaths of these four Pow's. Was their deaths due to the a/c crashing, or were they wounded in combat prior to the a/c crashing. Re: Deaths of four POW's
Lt. Robert H. Calkins was the co-pilot of B-17F,42-5377, 341st BS, 97 BG shot down on April 26,1943 by AA on an attack on Grosetto A/F. The entire crew was KIA. His later death date indicates that he was wounded (possibly bailed out) and Died of Wounds on May 24,1943.

Jack Bartmann, baled out of B-17G # 44-6861, 483BG/840BS 20/4/1945, died 22/4/1945.
Casualty Questionnaires in MACR 13817 states that he was beaten by civilians and shot by a German civilian in Lauregno, South Tirol, Italy. Joseph Boston, B-25D # 41-30386 340BG/487BS Andrew Cooney, B-24H # 42-95313 457BG/747BS |

Re: Deaths of four POW's
I set up a shared Google drive folder several years ago about the crash of the plane Jack Bartman was on and wrote up a description of what happened to the crew (including Bartman). I even found photo of the plane moments after it was hit.
Here is a link to part of that folder. https://drive.google.com/drive/folde...2M?usp=sharing You may find it interesting. |

Re: Deaths of four POW's
Thank you all for your excellent response's.
Just what I was looking for. Had seen one story of a war crime and looks like it was Bartmann ? Out of interest was it Bartman or Bartmann ? Enlistment shows Bartman. POW list Shows Bartmann, ( 2enteries ?). Thank you , Alex Last edited by Alex Smart; 4th October 2020 at 23:59. |

Alex, His IDPF file shows him as Jack Bartman, ASN: 32883370. All the correspondence to the family lists him as Bartman.
