Suggest you get the relevant Luftwaffe Crash Archive books which will give you much of what you seek. Failing that Battle of Britain Then & Now? I should also say that the next but one Battle of Britain Combat book from Simon Parry et al will cover 15 Aug 40 in some detail

Re: KG30 losses - 15 Aug & 9 Sept 1940

I currently have the following losses listed on 15 August 1940:

I./KG30 Junkers Ju88A. Failed to return from attack on Driffield and combat with fighters 1.30 p.m. No crew casualties recorded. Aircraft 100% write-off.

I./KG30 Junkers Ju88A. Failed to return from attack on Driffield and combat with fighters 1.30 p.m. No crew casualties recorded. Aircraft 100% write-off.
No further information was documented on the above two losses and it is possible that they are subject of incorrect reporting.

2./KG30 Junkers Ju88A. Landed at Oldenburg damaged by fighters during sortie to attack Driffield 1.30 p.m. Fw [ ] Stepukat, Uffz [ ] Scheiter, Gefr [ ] Lohmann, and Gefr [ ] Schönheber all unhurt. Aircraft 4D+KK damage state not recorded.

3./KG30 Junkers Ju88A-5. Shot down by Sgt A.L. McNay of No.73 Squadron during sortie to bomb Driffield and belly-landed at Hamilton Hill Farm, Barmston, south of Bridlington, 1.25 p.m. Harried by Sgt J. Hopewell of No.616 Squadron during landing. FF Uffz Ludwig von Lorentz, BO Uffz Heinrich Kenski, BF Obergefr Heinrich Prumann, and BS Gefr Johann Göbel all captured unhurt. Aircraft 4D+KL fired by crew 100% write-off.
Propeller blade, Junkers engine plate, and various other labels souvenired at the time, donated to Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum at Flixton.

4./KG30 Junkers Ju88A-5. Belly-landed at Oldenburg airfield damaged by fighters during sortie to attack Driffield 1.30 p.m. No crew casualties. Aircraft 40% damaged but repairable.
One of a number of 4./KG30 aircraft attached to 7. and 8./KG30 the previous evening in order to bolster the attack.

4./KG30 Junkers Ju88A-5. Shot down by P/O D.S. Scott of No.73 Squadron during sortie to attack Driffield and crashed and exploded at Alburn Farm, Fraisthorpe, south of Bridlington, 1.30 p.m. FF Fw Rudolf Bihr, BO Fw Robert Pohl, BF Uffz Severin-Günther Kürsch, and BS Uffz Arnulf-Georg Neumeyer all killed. Aircraft 4D+DM 100% write-off.
Due to the severity of the crash only Robert Pohl and Severin Kürsch could be identified on their burial in Bridlington Borough Cemetery, the remains of Arnulf Neumeyer and Rudolf Bihr both being buried there as 'Unknown' and later re-interred as such in the Soldatenfriedhof at Cannock Chase. Following further investigation, they were formally identified by the German War Graves Authority in 2002.

7./KG30 Junkers Ju88A-1 (8048). Port oil cooler damaged by fighters during sortie to attack Driffield and belly-landed near Hunmanby, south-west of Filey, 1.30 p.m. Possibly that claimed by F/O P.E.G. Carter of No.73 Squadron. BF Fw Georg Henneske killed, FF Oberlt Werner Bachmann, BO Uffz Werner Evers, and BS Flgr Robert Walther captured unhurt. Aircraft 4D+DR 100% write-off.

7./KG30 Junkers Ju88A-1. Shot down by fighters during sortie to attack Driffield and crashed in the North Sea 1.30 p.m. FF Lt Wolf-Dietrich Riede killed, BO Uffz Fritz Hartwich, BM Uffz Peter Panhuysen, and BF Flgr Richard Ulbrich all missing. Aircraft 100% write-off.
The 4D+CR and 4D+LR both failed to return from this sortie.

7./KG30 Junkers Ju88A-1. Shot down by fighters during sortie to attack Driffield and crashed in the North Sea 1.30 p.m. FF Fw Bernhard Gutow, BO Uffz Kurt Meier, BF Uffz Gerhard Kuhn, and BS Gefr Karl Orneschick all missing. Aircraft 100% write-off.

8./KG30 Junkers Ju88A-1. Crash-landed in Holland damaged by fighters off east coast of England during sortie to attack Driffield 1.30 p.m. BF Fw Heinz Przygodda slightly wounded, rest of crew unhurt. Aircraft 4D+KS 60% damaged - write-off.

8./KG30 Junkers Ju88A-1. Crashed on landing at Aalborg-West damaged by fighters off east coast of England during sortie to attack Driffield 1.30 p.m. Pilot unhurt, BO Uffz Joachim Rosin, BS Uffz Werner Jünnemann, and BF Fw Alfred Schumann all slightly wounded. Aircraft 75% damaged - write-off.
Crew allocations between the above two aircraft believed correct as shown.

Re: KG30 losses - 15 Aug & 9 Sept 1940

088 5074 (ATG) was Ju 88 A-1 version, no A-2 was built (cancelled variant).
All references to Ju 88 "A-2" refer to equipment status, not type designation. In short there were no A-2´s built.

333 was 088 0333 (FZB), 0274 was 088 0274 (FZB), 8032 was 088 8032 (SFW), 3195 was 088 3195 (HFW). In bold are the indentifying letters that indentified who made or assembled that airframe.

Re: KG30 losses - 15 Aug & 9 Sept 1940

Peter

What worries me somewhat is the difference your answer under post 7 is to the book Luftwaffe crashlog vol 2 published three years ago

The second 4./KG 30 aircraft was then listed as 4D+-M crashing in Auburn Farm. Now both individual letter D and name of the farm is both known/changed.

The 7./KG 30 aircraft 4D+DR lacked WNr (which I thought was surprising since it is very intact and also had the digits 48 clearly visible), but which now has been located. Crash place in the book was Bridlington Reservoir, Yorkshire, while you use something totally different now.

There are also other differences between your post 8 and Vol 3 in the book series. For example WNr 0274 is now an A-5 while the book says it was an A-1.

Are the changes made due to new archives located, or checkings of spellings/misprints or re-reading records noticing something has been missed? Because if so much can be found to differ while adding three more years of research, will you and the other in the Team ever dare to finish your 1939-1940 project? Perhaps I should put that question to Larry, but I suppose the moment came right now. I was hoping for the first volume to be published quite soon....

Cheers
Stig
