42 Sq RAF Beaufort attack on Lützow 13.8.41

Hi all,

I would like to ask if it is known serial and/or individual letter of Beaufort on which crew of Sgt R. H. Loveitta hit German pocket battle ship Lützow in North sea on 13.8.1941.

TIA

Pavel

Yes,

the full story of F/S Ray Loveitt's attack on the Lützow is in my book, "Die Jäger der Graf Zeppelin"
See
www.marshall-verlag.homepage.t-online.de

It was also in my earlier work "Sea Eagles" in English

Thanks Francis and would be possible to get the serial and/or letter from you?:-)
I do not need the whole story as I am writing only a few rows bio of the observer who claimed the hit.

If you are interested I can share with you info I have about him.

Re: 42 Sq RAF Beaufort attack on Lützow 13.8.41

The attack in question occurred on 13 June 1941, not 13 August, and included nine 42 Squadron Beauforts. The plane that got the hit was L9939 (AW*W), crewed by:

FS Ray H. Loveitt, RAFVR [who was awarded the DFM]
WO Alan Hubert Andrew Morris, RCAF R/53756
Sgt. Downing
Sgt. Wallace-Pannell

Hope this helps.

Mark

Re: 42 Sq RAF Beaufort attack on Lützow 13.8.41

The book "Torpedo Bomber" by Ralph Barker has a chapter that deals with this attack and a photo of the crew. This plane and crew claimed a He-115 earlier on does anyone have any info on this claim? The book "The Beaufort Special by Bruce Robertson should have some info on this attack. The book "Pocket Battleships of the Deutschland Class" Gerhard Koop & Klaus-Peter Schmolke has info on the Lutzow. Finally Sea Eagles on the Bf 109T is a fine book.

Hi all,

Mark - many thanks for details.
James - thanks for sources, I know from WWII newspaper that the crew claimed He 115 but unfortunately I was not able to find any other details.
