the dieppe landing, what are the possibilities over there ever having flown a FW190 with italian markings ?

Hi all,

Following my questions about markings on Johnnie Johnsons spitfire on the allied forum, we basically had a discussion about the biography where Johnnie mentions being attacked by a FW190 with Italian markings. http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=6346

"Johnnie Johnson was given his first command, No. 610 Squadron, in July 1942. During the Dieppe raid, he flew four sorties, got one enemy fighter and shared another. This sortie almost proved to be his last as he was set upon by a FW 190 with Italian markings. Forbidden to fly below 2,000 feet (ships had been ordered to fire upon anything below this altitude) Johnnie dove and pulled out just above the ships masts. Anti-aircraft fire was intense but he pulled out unscathed. How the Italian FW 190 fared he never knew."

Personally I find it very unbelievable there actually were any FW190 with italian markings over Dieppe. Could anybody shed any light on that ?

Was it a misidentification on Johnnie Johnsons part ?

Thanks,

Wiek Luijken

Fw 190 Units Over Dieppe

Hello Wiek

It is almost 100% safe to say that there were no Italian Fw 190 fighters over Dieppe on 19 August 1942. This almost certainly is one of the very common misidentifications that occur in the heat of battle. Andrew Arthy has a very nice article on the role played by the Fw 190 units over Dieppe at http://fw190.hobbyvista.com/dieppe.htm that you may or may not yet know about which is very complete including victory and loss lists and an Order of Battle of the Luftwaffe units involved. I hope that this may help you out a little.

Horrido!

Leo
