British ground-based radars, 1942
I've come across the abbreviation M.R.U. in the context of radar performance in Egypt in 1942. Also "M.R.U. Types 4 and 9 stations".
I'm familiar with M.O.R.U. (Mobile Operations Room Unit) but this seems to be something different — Mobile Radar Unit perhaps, or does somebody know the correct interpretation? |

Re: British ground-based radars, 1942
Nick, you say it appears 'in context of radar performance': does the Mobile Radio Unit name fit?
One of the tasks sometimes given to MRUs was to listen for enemy radar transmissions to identify type/location. There was nothing to transcribe, it was the detecting the transmitting device that was the object. Bruce

Thanks Orwell, I’d never come across that one before.

And thanks from me too. In the past I read 'MRU' in North Africa as being a Mobile Radio Unit and now can see I have to revisit those documents and think again.

Point of interest, Arthur "Captain Mainwaring" Lowe served as a radar technician with REME in the Middle East.

British ground-based radars that were mobile. I had not run across this before.

Re: British ground-based radars, 1942
I have no excuse for not knowing about them because I was aware of
Mobile Radar Control Posts (MRCP) and should have realised there must have been a corresponding set of radar devices and units to operate them. Duh. Bruce
