Friendship may have placed me in a conflict of interest, but I am pleased to report that Larry Milberry, a.k.a. Canav Books (
http://www.canavbooks.com) has a new production - Aviation in Canada - Bombing and Coastal Operations Overseas, 1939-1945. Larry seems determined to reach every last surviving RCAF veteran while there is still time. What this book lacks by way of a consistent narrative, it makes up in anecdotes and insights from documents, personal recollections, contemporary letters and the contents of trunks and scrapbooks.
An example of what he has assembled can be found on pages 111 through 114. Warring Laird Jennings, apart from combat experiences, had preserved copies of booklets, "When You Go to Canada" (advice for British personnel about to encounter North American life and culture) and "Notes for Your Guidance" (for those about to meet Americans on their home turf). They make amusing and provacative reading - and some pointed remarks have relevance today.
There is plenty of drama, heroism and tragedy here (the reports of "sole survivors" of downed bombers are strking). Larry does not skimp on indexes, paper quality, photo captions and clarity of reproduction. If $ 55.00 is deemed "not cheap", the fact is that "Bombing and Coastal Operations" is not a cheap in important ways, from reverance for subect to sturdy binding and clear pictures.
