External bomb carriers on D0 17
Attached is a photo from e-bay of a Do 17 with external bomb carriers, possibly ETC-Träger 50/III d (can anyone verify?).
I'm looking more photos of Do 17/Do 215 with external bomb carriers either on the sides of the fuselage or under the fuselage. To what extent was this a common practice? So far I've only seen it on this photo but I'm no Do 17 expert so I could have missed it. /Mike |

Re: External bomb carriers on D0 17
Hi, Mikael...
A few more for your collection listed below... all from old e-bay auctions. KG77 (taking off); possibly Fernaufkl.Gr.Nacht, Fernaufkl.Gr.123 and one unknown (both of the last two only with the bomb racks showing), all at different times of the war and not solely bomber units either. Also, an excellent picture on P.27 of Manfred Griehl's Do17E-Z & Do215B (Airdoc) showing 4U+BK 'bombed-up' and ready to go. This publication states bomb type as SC50. Your photo is interesting, as this is the first time I've seen the bombs side-mounted. May I enquire as to whether or not you have any indication as to what unit the photo relates to? Re: External bomb carriers on D0 17
Hi Paul. Thanks for your pointer to the Airdoc booklet, forgot I had it! :-) As you say, there are several with bombs under the fuselage, but none with the bombs side-mounted. I don't remember seeing a reference to the unit.
Hopefully someone else on the forum knows more about the side-mounting. I'm still lacking an indepth Do 17 book based on serious research. Is anyone working on it? /Mike |

Re: External bomb carriers on D0 17
Hi, Mikael & Clint...
I don't know of any upcoming publication. The only other one I have specific to the Do17 is Dornier 17 in focus by Chris Goss (Red Kite), although admittedly, it is undoubtedly more a photographic record of this aircraft rather than an in-depth analysis. Very good stuff, all the same. Regards, Paul |
