Re: March 31, 1945 416 Squadron "blue on blue"

So, it seems the "matter was some kind covered"...?

Did Major Long ever met the two Spitfires pilots, after (perhaps asking for PARDON)? What the ORB for 416 Squadron do says about that action? Do we have something on the RAF side? I mean a recollection? A RAF Logbook entry?

BRIAN> Fantastin INFO you added!!

Re: March 31, 1945 416 Squadron "blue on blue"

Sorry chaps, my only information came from the source I mentioned. The Canadian pilot who was interviewed spent some time at the US Air Base (uncomfortably) giving testimony before the court martial was held. He was not there to hear the sentence however it seems the USAAF already had all the details they needed. Whether the affair was dropped given the war was almost over I do not know.

Re: March 31, 1945 416 Squadron "blue on blue"

The 416 Sqn ORB states the following, "Squadron patrolled RHEINE/HENGELO/BORCULA/ENSCHEDE area. F/O S A R Round shot down by single Mustang bearing Silver American Markings - area Ahaus 11:22 hrs. Mustang flying SW 7000-8000ft Mustang attacked by Spitfire and strikes seen on starboard wing. One pilot seen to bale out - not known whether Mullens or Round. Weather 10/10ths layers 1000 to 6000ft."

Therefore the time, place and height do not match the US combat report noted above. Looks like the Spitfires fired back

Regards

Martin
