Ar234 pilot Hauptmann (Hans) Hirshberger

I've been reading about an Arado Ar 234 that was shot down over Remagen on March 14th 1945 by Captain Don Bryan of the 328th FS, 352nd Fighter Group. The Arado 234 was flown by Hauptmann (Hans) Hirshberger of 6./KG 76 who went down with the aircraft.

Does anyone have any further information on Hauptmann (Hans) Hirshberger of 6./KG?

thanks
CL

Hello CL,

From Jan Horn, KG 76: Die Chronik des Kampfgeschwaders 76 in Zeitraum 01. 01. 1944 bis 08. 05. 1945. (2019), pp. 257-8:

From p. 315:

Stab II./KG 76...
IT
Hptm. Johannes Hirschberger [born]24.07.1907 07.01.1945-14.03.1945 …

From deZeng & Stankey, Luftwaffe Officer Career Summaries (online):

HIRSCHBERGER, ? . 14.03.45 Hptm., in 6./KG 76 KIA

HIRSCHBERGER, Johannes. (W.B.K. Hamburg I). 01.11.40 RDA as Lt. (Kr.O./Fl.).

best regards,

Jim

Re: Ar234 pilot Hauptmann (Hans) Hirshberger

Hello

A fieild near Bruchhausen can't be between Ober- and Unterelsaff.

But about 20 years ago there were arguments, if Hans Hirschberger was burried as "unknown" on the small Bruchhausen wargraveyard.

But there was no acceptation by the authorities, so only a plate rembers the still "missing" pilot, even if he is most probably burried there.

BTW: Does someone know anythin about Olt. Neumeister Pilot in KG 76 Ar 234 F1+ES? His war memories are mentioned in the new Jet & Prop Editorial.

Regards

Daniel

Re: Ar234 pilot Hauptmann (Hans) Hirshberger

Hello Daniel,

Jan Horn, in his KG 76: Die Chronik ..., 2019, lists Dr. Frank Neumeister as a Leutnant and pilot in 8./KG 76, p.421.

In the last reference to Neumeister on p. 227 in the text, Horn writes:

"Fernschreiben von Lt. Neumeister, Fliegerhorstkommandantur A(o) 2/VI, an die III./KG 676 in Achmer vom 9. Februar 1945:
'Gelandet am 08.02.45 um 08.10 Uhr. Kraftstoffmangel. Flugplatz Münster-Loddenheide 800 x80 m ohne Startbahn. QMR. Erbitte weitere Anweisungen.'

Neumeister was on a pre-strike weather recce to highways near Brussels. According to p.197 and 201, his regular Ar 234 was F1+OS.

There is nothing about Neumeister in deZang & Stankey.

best regards,

Jim

Hi Jim, is Jan Horn's book worth acquiring? I have a particular interest in the Ar 234.

Re: Ar234 pilot Hauptmann (Hans) Hirshberger

Hi Chris,

Beware, it is pricy. Please do your due diligence and research other reviews!

Horn gives a meticulous day to day description of the operations of KG 76 without the hyperbole of other authors. What I like is the exact time of take-offs and landings obviously taken from flugbuchen and the exact quotes from sources such as the daily "Abendmeldung West" rather than a summary. In the appendices are included lists of losses by each Gruppe, a list of commanding officers and their dates right down to Staffelkapitän/Staffelführer, and an alphabetical list of all flight personnel.

However, while it has indices to place names and persons (including Neumeister), I had to make my own for the individual aircraft werknummern and aircraft codes.

Also, do not expect an extensive photo collection of aircraft. This is a reference book.

I hope this helps.

Jim

You're welcome. I forgot to add the obvious. It's in German.

I would like to mention an English language book about KG 76 which is scheduled for "early" this year.
