Lithuanian pilots in the RAF
Flt Lt Romas Marcinkus is described as the only Lithuanian pilot in the RAF but there was a pilot F/Sgt Alibinus Lutzius who flew with 213 Squadron in 1944, and probably shared in an aerial victory in October 1944.
His name seems Lithuanian but could be a Commonwealth pilot naturalised, perhaps Canadian or Australian? regards Keith |

Re: Lithuanian pilots in the RAF
Nothing in AIR 78 that I could find. Nearest was Lew Lutzes, 916582.
Changed his name to Lawton. Could he have possibly have been German ? This may have accouted for a change of name. There were several Germans who served in the British forces in WW2. Nothing in https://listakrzystka.pl/en/?s=Lutzius In "findagrave" the only ones that I could find were all American. Last edited by Alex Smart; 10th October 2021 at 21:35. |

Re: Lithuanian pilots in the RAF
One of the three successful escapees in The Great Escape (the guy played by Charles Bronson in the movie) was from Lithuania.

Re: Lithuanian pilots in the RAF
Hello,
From the ORB, name is spelt - LIUDZIUS. F/Sgt Albinas, Liudzius - 943051 - RAFVR However the AIR 78 gives his Christian name as Albert. Parents address is given as London. In the CWGC website. Flew Mustangs FB534 and KH608 and others in November 44. Landed KH633 within Allied lines on the 23rd due to high Glycol temperatures. Seems he died in the crash landing (?). Another forum has the following - "left 0630 on sweep, strafed MT near Sokolac W Višegrad, flew into the ground". He rests at Belgrade War Cemetery, Serbia. Also noted in HMAW Vol 5, Page 318 - "Left 0630, strafed M/T, E Sarajevo, failed to pull out from diving attack, possibly shot down by Flak". Anyone know what became of his aircraft ? Re: Lithuanian pilots in the RAF
I have used Google Translate (sorry for the quality, but the website is in Lithuanian) and it's written here that he was actually born in London to Lithuanian immigrants: https://www-urm-lt.translate.goog/hu..._tr_pto=nui,sc
