Question A.C.2 Walter Roper D.F.M.

I have been helping someone with a query on the above chap.
This is what I know:

402609 A.C.2 Walter Roper from Leeds was awarded the DFM for services in France on 3rd June 1919.

I am trying to find a citation.
He was also awarded the Decoration Militaire (Belgian) February 20th 1919 as 402069 2nd Corporal Storeman Walter Roper.

In WWII he was in the Royal Auxiliary Air Force as 90925.This is an odd number as 5 digit numbers were obviously related pre-war service.
He was in pre-war and joined No. 916 (County of Warwick) Squadron On 27th March 1939 he was granted a commission as an Acting Pilot Officer.
As an Acting Pilot Officer with the D.F.M. he was promoted to the rank of Flying Officer on 13th July 1939.
War was imminent and on 1st September 1940 he was then promoted to Flight Lieutenant (temporary).
On 21st April 1945 he was transferred from Balloon Command to Administration and Special Duties.
He was awarded the Air Efficiency Medal on 26th January 1950.
He relinquished his commission on 10th February 1954 and was granted permission to retain the rank of Flight Lieutenant.
Can anyone shed anylight on what he did in WWI???

Barrageballoonman,

Just an addition, but in Flight Magazine of Feb. 20, 1919 it says that 2nd Corpl. Storeman Walter Roper had been awarded the Belgian "Decoration Militaire".

Re: A.C.2 Walter Roper D.F.M.

Ian Tavendere in his 1990 book on the DFM notes that there were 57 awards of the DFM gazetted in 1919; of these only 8 included citations. Roper is one of those without a citation. The only recourse is to locate the recommendation, which is not easy. If it exists it is probably in the area of Air 1/1031/204/5/1433 (which covers August 1917 to December 1918). The WW1 recommendations for Honours and Awards also extends into Air 1/1032 and Air 1/1033. The three boxes contain a total of 14 folders of recommendations. The dates covered in a given folder frequently overlaps other folders.

I do not know if this rather extensive material has been digitized, or microfilmed. You may need to make a visit to the NA/PRO, or hire a researcher to search through the folders.

Enjoy!

Frank.

Re: A.C.2 Walter Roper D.F.M.

Not sure if you picked up on the 90925 number was his officer commishioned number, issued to him in 1939 or whenever, it is not an enlisted man's number.
