SS Merisaar sunk by German aircraft 15 July 1940
Hi guys
A bit of a mystery to me, so I hope someone can unravel the pieces!! SS Merisaar was an Estonian cargo vessel captured by U-99 on 12 July 1940; she was ordered to a French port, provided with a German (?) crew and sent on a clandestine (?) mission to the Irish coast, where she was erroneously bombed by a German aircraft (what type/unit?) off Queenstown on 15 July. The crew was rescued (by what?) Something doesn't sound quite right to me! Over to the experts! Cheers Brian

Hi Brian,
Google 'SS Merisaar' and the first result will be the ship's company. Also see the ship's entry under 'U-99' on the 'uboat.net' website. Both should answer part of the question, but not who attacked it. Sorry, no secret mission to Ireland ! Regards, Martin.

Stab, I, II and III/KG 27 were very active on both dates and it all depends on what time the attacks/sinkings occurred
