SS Merisaar sunk by German aircraft 15 July 1940
Hi guys
A bit of a mystery to me, so I hope someone can unravel the pieces!! SS Merisaar was an Estonian cargo vessel captured by U-99 on 12 July 1940; she was ordered to a French port, provided with a German (?) crew and sent on a clandestine (?) mission to the Irish coast, where she was erroneously bombed by a German aircraft (what type/unit?) off Queenstown on 15 July. The crew was rescued (by what?) Something doesn't sound quite right to me! Over to the experts! Cheers Brian |

Re: SS Merisaar sunk by German aircraft 15 July 1940
Hi Brian,
Google 'SS Merisaar' and the first result will be the ship's company. Also see the ship's entry under 'U-99' on the 'uboat.net' website. Both should answer part of the question, but not who attacked it. Sorry, no secret mission to Ireland ! Regards, Martin. |

Stab, I, II and III/KG 27 were very active on both dates and it all depends on what time the attacks/sinkings occurred
