8th AF B-17s/B-24s to MTO

Hi folks!

I wonder if anyone know where to find documents/records regarding 8th AF B-17s and B-24s transferred to 15AF, MTO?

Regards

Re: 8th AF B-17s/B-24s to MTO

15th Air Force was established on November 1, 1943. As far as I am aware there were no B-17s or B-24s, or such units, transferred to 15th from 8th AF. All such aircraft and units came directly from the U.S. The three extra bomb groups used in the Aug 1, 1943 Ploesti raid were from 8th AF, and were probably temporarily assigned to 9th AF.

Enjoy!

Frank.

Hi Frank

You have 97th bomb group that first was under 8AF doing missions before transferred to North Africa then 15AF.

And 885 and 859 squadrons from 492BG i believe that went to MTO.
I have seen document that 446BG had a few aircraft that endes up in MTO.
Some BG in 3rd air division phased out the B-24 for the B-17.

Re: 8th AF B-17s/B-24s to MTO

In Nov. 1942 the 97 / 301BGs were transferred from Eighth AF to Twelfth (Algeria) then to Fifteenth 1943; the 44th/389th/93rd were temporarily sent to join the Ninth AF for the Ploesti missions.
The 885th BS (formerly 122 Liason) moved from Langley Field to Morocco in June 1944 to join MAAF.
The 859BS was assigned to a Provisional Group in Italy (Brindisi) in Dec. 1944 from the 492BG which had been withdrawn from combat to take up CARPETBAGGER operations in England. The 492nd other squadrons were re-assigned (856/857/858).

Nick

Re: 8th AF B-17s/B-24s to MTO

If I recall correctly Ed Bishop's "Big Triangle First" gave itemised details of B17's and B24's that were transferred to the ME in the early years. Think that "8th & 9th Losses" volume gives details also. But don't forget the RAF B17's were there first I believe. Later joined by a few from the Far East/Pacific .
