KG40 in the Med Autumn 1941
During November and maybe December one squadron (I think) of KG40 was sent to the Med with its FW200 to help in supplying German forces in North Africa, especially with fuel. Based on ULTRA intercepts, I believe they were based in Lecce. The mission was not a big success, Fliegerkorps X quickly asking for more Ju 52 instead because the serviceability issues imposed by the use of the FW200 were in no relation to the benefit that the enhanced carrying capacity brought.
Does anyone have further details on this posting, especially if any losses were suffered? Many thanks in advance! All the best Andreas

Re: KG40 in the Med Autumn 1941
I have a number of photos from this time (see my Sea Eagles bookVol 1) whilst any losses have been added to me on Jerry Scutts' book on the FW 200. I do have some logbook entries as well

Re: KG40 in the Med Autumn 1941
According to Christopher Shores during early September 1941 6 Fw 200 and 9 He 111, all from KG40, arrived in Greece for operation over the Gulf of Suez. area, some of them of each type were equipped to drop torpedos.I do no belive that KG 40 main duties here was to o help in supplying German forces in North Africa, especially with fuel.
On 6th September 2 Fw 200 had taken off from Greece at 15:58 and 16:03 on an Bew.Aufkl. to the Red Sea. However shortly afterwards at 16:25 Fw 200 C WNr. 0007(?) F8+GH crashed into the sea near Cape Sounion and blew up, Oblt. Hans Neumann and crew all killed. The second carried on, attacking a ship in the Gulf of Suez at 21:27 om which the crew claimed to have achieved a hit, and landed on airfield Eleusis at o4:37. A very long trip indeed. Greetings from Norway Knut |

Re: KG40 in the Med Autumn 1941
Hi Knut
In September certainly not. But by November ground operations in North Africa went very badly, and supply had been pretty comprehensively interrupted. That's when the FW200s were used for fuel supply runs, to augment the Ju 52 fleet. But it wasn't considered a successful experiment. Evidence is from ULTRA, so very reliable. All the best Andreas
