Re: Johnen: Duel under the stars

I have the book. Johnen doesn't provide any detail of the actions in the book itself. He jumps from detailing a specific encounter on the 22/8 to another on 6/9. The only mention he makes of the intervening period (from 22/8) is the following:

"During the next several nights we had no peace, for the lift went on from Italy to Warsaw. The British disregarded their huge losses. Night after night these flying good strains took to the air and night after night we shot them out of the sky."

However at the back of the book Johnen lists his claims as follows:

No.27 - Halifax @ 21.53hrs, 26.08.44, SE Hungary, map ref: MT-54
No.28 - Mitchell @ 22.30hrs, 26.08.44, SE Hungary, map ref: OT-76
No.29 - Halifax @ 21.50hrs, 27.08.44, SE Hungary, map ref: NS-59
No.30 - Halifax @ 22.12hrs, 28.08.44, SE Hungary, map ref: SM-45

He was based at Novisad, near Belgrade.

Re: Johnen: Duel under the stars

Thanks Jim,

This helps a lot!
205. Group did lost one Liberator on 27./28.8.1944...only loss of the night. So it might have been his victim.
regards

Re: Johnen: Duel under the stars

Hi Csaba

Recently I started to research Gardening of Danube operations by 205 Group RAF. Definitely I would like to know what is known in Hungary about this topic. NJG 6 activities (Maybe NJG 5 or 100 as well?), sunk Hungarian ships, and crashed planes of 205 Group RAF. We can mail it out...if you can assist. THX
