Obfw. Josef "Pepi" Jennewein JG51

I've been looking at Jennewein for a while and wondered about his reputation. I know that he won the 1939 Nordic World Sky Championship. In his score its different on some web sites. So I've looked in JFV9/II and 12/I.
On the 18Jan43 the 202 BAP made a raid in the Leshkova region with 9 Pe-2 and lost 6 Pe-2.
Jennewein claimed his (20) at 08:01 (21) at 08:02 (22) at 08:03 (23) at 08:05 (24) at 08:06.
(Lt. Joachim Brendel 2./JG51 also claimed in the same battle (16) 08:02 (17) 08:05 (18) 08:09 which sounds more reasonable for actually shooting down a Pe-2)

On 06May43 raid on Orel-Central airfield by 7 Pe-2 of the 24 BAP, there was 3 Pe-2 shot down (No other claims but Jennewein's for Pe-2).
(47) 13:30 (48) 13:31 (49) 13:32 (50) 13:38 (51) 13:42

On Jennewein's claims for the 06May43 there were two other Pe-2 that had damages. One of which was wrecked on a forced landing. To give you some of the things wrong in his claims being listed. On Tony Woods list for the 6May43 it has his 47th - 49th victories listed as an Il-2 and missing the 50th. The 51st is listed correctly as an Il-2 with the time of 13:41. In the JFV 12/I it has the Pe-2 listed which matches the type aircraft shot down. The difference in the time for the 51st is only 1 minute (13:42). In my first post I had his 51st victory as Pe-2 when it should be an Il-2.

Hi, Nokose

I wondered what you ment by this sentence:

'which sounds more reasonable for actually shooting down a Pe-2'

Regards,

There was an article about Jennewein in one of the earliest issues of Czech REVI Magazine...try to look for it. I think they did english translation as well that time...

Hi Andreas, What I meant was on reading accounts of Pe-2's being shot down it's not easy to shoot one down in one minute. Unless you hit something like the pilot or fuel. Brendel's claims look like he made more then one pass at his target. Jennewein has another battle with a number of claims against Pe-2s that I have no information on.

Hi Peter, Was the article on Jennewein very long? I'd be interested in what it had on him. I found the other incident for the 23Feb43 involving his dogfight with Pe-2s.

I don't know how many Pe-2 were involved and if the 38 BAP was the only regiment flying with them. Kapt. Nikolay Titovich Mikhaylov was leading a raid on Zikeevo station at 12:20 (Moscow) and were attacked by FW 190. Eight crews didn't return.

1./JG51 Oblt. Hans Boos Pe-2 (35) 10:38 44173
2./JG51 Oblt. Edwin Thiel Pe-2 (43) 10:39 44294
2./JG51 Fw Helmut Lange Pe-2 (6) 10:40 54172
2./JG51 Obfw Josef Jennewein Pe-2 (30) 10:40 44292
Oblt Thiel Pe-2 (44) 10:41 44264
Obfw Jennewein Pe-2 (31) 10:42 54123
Oblt Thiel Pe-2 (45) 10:45 44264
Obfw Jennewein Pe-2 (32) 10:45 54114
Oblt Thiel Pe-2 (46) 10:46 54142
Obfw Jennewein Pe-2 (33) 10:48 54111

In reference to the 23Feb43 dogfight let me add before the overclaiming stuff starts that I went back and counted the number crews missing of the 38 BAP and found only 7 crews missing but did find that there were 4 crews also of the 261 BAP that were lost. The 261 BAP could be from earlier in the morning but the same area.

Hi Nokose,

Could Anton Lindner's claim against a Pe-2 at 0734hrs account for one of 261 BAP's losses?

Nick

Nick on focusing in it looks like the time is 12:12 (Moscow) next to the date which is probably the take off time. The only one knowing for sure here is probably Nikita Ergov from the documents.
