Re: Red Tobin No,71 POPOCATAPETL I

Hi Alex,

The number above is for all the pilots who served with 71 or were attached to it including non-US citizens.

I haven't had the time to go over your list with a fine tooth comb but at first glance it seems to be missing the following:

C. F. Ambrose
L. E. Allen
J. B. Ayer
D. W. Beeson
E. R. Bitmead
V. A. Boehle
R. A. Boock
G. A. Brown
R. C. Care
W. M. Churchill
G. A. Daymond
A. G. Donahue
J. G. DuFour (aka J. J. Crowley)
V. J. France
C. O. Galbreith
J. E. Griffin
J. C. Harrington
H. D. Hively
B. F. Kennerly
A. B. Mamedoff
N. Maranz
H. F. Marting
G. St.M Maxwell
S. T. Meares
J. J. Mooney
R. A. Moore
W. Pendleton
S. N. Pisanos
R. L. Priser
P. B. Provenzano
D. H. Satterlee
W. E. G. Taylor
R. C. Ward
G. H. Whitlow
R. C. Wilkinson

Also, it's V. C. Keough not Keogh and L. A. Chatterton not Chatteron.

Hope that helps,

Tim

Re: Red Tobin No,71 POPOCATAPETL I

Just noticed you've got a J. J. Cowley which is no doubt meant to be J. J. Crowley (J. G. DuFour).

Re: Red Tobin No,71 POPOCATAPETL I

Thanks for the highlight, my tablet respells for me even as I post mail
Col also spots the same in other posts.
I have no idea how to correct it except after by edits.

Wonder why Crowley and DuFour were entered in the ORB ? Would have thought that that would only have used his "correct" name only ?

Re: Red Tobin No,71 POPOCATAPETL I

Hi Alex,

He had tried to join the RCAF under his own name but for reasons unknown was turned down. He returned to Canada a few weeks later and applied under the name "James Jay Crowley" probably with some dubious documentation that made him claim Canadian citizenship. He started using his own name due to becoming engaged to a WAAF (Doreen Cohen who he married on 9th May 1942). He had his name changed back to John Guilbert DuFour and his US citizenship recognised on the 9th April 1942. The ORB lists the last sortie for Crowley as the 28th April and it caused some problems with Crowley listed as missing in some Eagle records right up until 1974!

Re: Red Tobin No,71 POPOCATAPETL I

Thanks for the explanation, which would explain the different ORB entries.
Thanks

Re: Red Tobin No,71 POPOCATAPETL I

Hi Alex,

I see that you have edited your list above but that it still contains some pilots who were not members of 71. These are:

J. D. G. U. Four
F. G. Lavakas
N. Morant's
Morris
J. R. A. Peel
G. V. Stone
Walker
D. Wooley

Also your list is missing V. J. France. Vic served with the squadron from 29th July 1942 until transfer on the 29th September.

Two other errors with surnames were also apparent, it's Hively not Hugely and Marting not Matting.

In terms of non-US citizens who were members of the squadron. There were nine:
Ambrose; Bitmead; Brown; Churchill; Gilbert; Meares; Pisanos (although he was granted US citizenship on transfer to the 4th FG); Wilkinson; Woodhouse

Hope this all helps.

Tim

Re: Red Tobin No,71 POPOCATAPETL I

Hello Tim,
Well spotted.
France, see my list on page 2, have no idea why it disappeared in my later one ?
Am now looking at the others you note.

Those you list as Not being members of 71 Sqn. I found them in the ORB pages.
N.Morant's is correctly N.Morantz.

Hi Alex,

I think with Morantz you might be being confused with N. Maranz who we have on the list already.

The ones that I listed as not being with the squadron were not members of the squadron. They may have flown with the squadron on an op or ops but were not part of the squadron's roster or order of battle.

Re: Red Tobin No,71 POPOCATAPETL I

Hi Alex,

Forgot to also mention I think it's safe to say that you can remove "J. D. G. U. Four", I'm certain it's a misspelling or misinterpretation of J. G. DuFour (J. J. Crowley). I'm also inclined to wonder whether this "Lavakas" is also a misspelling or misinterpretation of Zavakos.

Cheers,

Tim
