ID two JU88's lost D Day 6 June 1944

Having just read Chris Goss’s excellent article “Countering Overlord” in the current issue of FlyPast magazine. I am hoping that someone can identify two Ju88’s and crews from ZG 1 lost on D Day 6 June. One was credited to F/O Johnnie Houlton (485 Sqn) and he shared the second with F/Lt MacDonald, F/O Mayston and F/Sgt Atkins. Any help appreciated.

Re: ID two JU88's lost D Day 6 June 1944

Hi Tony,

I have the A.I.(k) Reports relating to two Ju 88's lost on the 7th June one being 2N + CK and 2N + NK, both being hit by A.A fire, I cannot find anything in my files regarding the units losses on the 6th, wish I could have helped.

Regards,

Melvin

ZG 1 lost more than two aircraft. Chris Goss covers this in "Bloody Biscay" and I give details of four (from ULTRA intercepts) here: http://www.ghostbombers.com/Bongart/ZG1_a.html

Oops Chris, should have looked there first, many thanks.
Thanks Melvin but its the 6th I was searching for, there was an Irish connection with Johnnie Houlton.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing! So I missed 7 aircraft over the Beaches on 6 June 1944 in my article for which I must apologise. However surviving logbooks make no mention of such an attack

Re: ID two JU88's lost D Day 6 June 1944

Another researcher sent me an extract of Johnnie Houlton's report in which he says two crewmen from his first claim baled out and the aircraft crashed on fire by the side of a road. In the loss list in Chris' book Bloody Biscay it shows Ju88C-6 750597 shot down with Bs Ogef Gerhard Weber killed, other crewmen safe ? Would this make this one a good possibility for Houltons first victim, his second shared claim is described as making a crash landing at high speed with a prop. breaking off and bounding off like a catherine wheel.
