Re: V1 flying bombs shot down by the 68 Sqn
Paval,
You need to check the book by Brian Cull titled Diver! Diver! Diver! (or as I sometimes refer to it, Diver Factorial Cubed). It lists all air-to-air claims against the V-1, with many descriptions from combat reports. (Just thought I would save Brian the effort of having to reference himself). Enjoy! Frank.

Re: V1 flying bombs shot down by the 68 Sqn
This list is based on the book B. Cull, Diver Diver Diver. At first sight somehow strange. The very first item 9 / 10 May 1944 A.B. Harvey / B.StJ. Wynell-Sutherland MM683? 1-1 How to shoot Harvey V1 about a month before the Germans began to shoot against Britain? The slow Beaufighter? Harvey is there something suspicious, often without proper recognition of the downing. Where there married F / Lt R.W. Dalton? The Personnel Report 68 Sqn Occurence not. Does not operate at 604 or the 25 Sqn? Etc

Re: V1 flying bombs shot down by the 68 Sqn
This is a possible explanation. Then there is 23 / 24 July 1944 A.B. Harvey / B.StJ. Wynell-Sutherland Mosquito XVII NT364 1-1. Brand Mosquito NT364 is NF.Mk.XXX. Mosquitoes NF.MK.XXX 68Sqn got up in February 1945. Mosquito NT 364 owned 157 Sqn. I'm not an expert, get 157Sqn Mosquito NF.MK.XXX also up in February 1945? Pavel |

Re: V1 flying bombs shot down by the 68 Sqn
Hello Pavel,
the date for the very first V-1 claim by 68 sqn (Harvey / Wynell - Sutherland) is given in B. Cull book as written in the list above (9/10 MAY 1944) and is recorded as a second ever submitted by Allied pilot. The first is recorded the previous night (8/9 MAY) by Tempest pilot R. E. Barckley, 3 sqn, Tempest JN755. The crew was probably flying Beaufigher at that time, but the serial given in the book is MM683 corresponding to Mosquito (S/Ldr M. Mansfeld personal machine in late 1944). The explanation of these early claims is that the crews probably encountered V-1 released during firing tests before the main attack in June 1944 started. The list in the book is very comprehensive and accounts even the claims given only in published memories of various pilots. For example the claims for Czechs M.A. Liskutin (DFC, AFC) a F. Mares (DFM) are given in the book, but are not supported in any official Czech document. To be more complicated it seems that IWM holds record of combat film footage of F. Mares attacking V-1 on July 9, 1944. Regards. David |
