For Atoll read Sidewinder

Hi All:

On pages 118-119 of the 1983 Osprey Air Combat book Republic F-105 Thunderchief by David Anderton, there are two photos showing damage to the tail unit of F-105D-10-RE 60-5376.

The caption says that it was initially implied that an Atoll AAM from a MiG 17 caused the damage, but in reality it was an AIM-9 Sidewinder from a 'friendly' aircraft which hit '376.

The F-105 was able to RTB with quite fearful damage. Can any of your 'Thud' fans out there put a name and/or a date to this event, or put me on a heading to a potential source ?

TIA for any help offered.
