I believe the British were first with such thinkings, and of course it was in the Royal Navy it happened.
In 1915 Squadron Commander Usborne designed a "contraption" called the AP-1, where an unmanned airship connected with a BE 2c below would separate at enough height to be able to intercept the dreaded Zeppelins. Unfortunately its first live test ended in disaster and the concept was not followed up. The second concept, again within the Royal Navy, was when John Porte connected a Bristol Scout to a developed Curtiss Flying boat (the Porte Baby). This time the small aircraft sat on top of the big one! Although the first separation was quite successful the idea itself was considered too dangerous and I don't believe anyone took it any further during the Great War. Cheers Stig |
