Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft
Hello,
Another difficult to read STAe number on a Caudron, first two digits either 43 or 45,last two digits 13 or 15. The machine is a Caudron G.6 and can also be seen from a different angle in Soltan and Davilla https://www.ebay.fr/itm/126703198510...QAAOSwP8Vm~ZWf The seller also has a few other aircraft related photos including a couple of less frequently seen machines https://www.ebay.fr/sch/i.html?_dkr=...c=1&_nkw=avion Regards, Clint |

Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft
Hi Clint. The weight table lower on the tail is "PU 300" ( useful load) so the serial looks like 4313; French 5s had a gap in the top stroke (unless re-marked). Compare with the Nieuport 17 numbers.
PC 200 at the bottom (fuel load). Nick Sorry Stig, just missed you ! Can't see a cross bar on the 3rd. number.... |

Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft
Very nice shots Clint
The early Caudron is either a B or C model. There were so many variations that I can't be certain. Not sure what you mean with the G.III with EMA? Escuela Militar? What I would say, it is the first civil registered aircraft in Colombia. This register came into being ca 1923. Previously A-1 was thought to have been a Junkers F 13, but there is no longer any such F 13 listed by Lennart Andersson in his book. Since Colombia received three G.III from France, it is possible it is one of them, but I don't think we can rule out a former French Army one. Cheers Stig |

Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft
Thanks Stig,
I've looked through Hauet's Les Avions Caudrons and I still can't identify the variant shown in the link for the early machine.. The information on the Colombian machines was new to me and therefore was unable to influence my decision to identify the G.III as being with the EMA. I'd gone with the info in Davilla and Soltan, which indeed states Escuela Militar de Aviation, which has three G.III in service there in early 1922. So, while I happily accept Lennart's information about A-1 being the first on the civil registration, I wonder whether this was originally one of the three EMA machines, unless that unit's aircraft were civil registered. Any thoughts or info? Regards, Clint |

Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft
No worries Clint
When identifying the "Early Caudron" as a B or C type I used a round-about method, ie I excluded what it could not be. To me the equal span of the two wing pairs, excludes later models and also some B and C that had unequal ones. Not Gospel, I know..... With regard to the Colombian G.III marked A-1, I am pretty certain it is the first "civil" registered aircraft in the country. Before Lennart's book A-1 was identified as a Junkers F 13. Since Lennart does not include A-1 as a F 13 anymore (he has nothing to say about the A-1 as such in the book) I am thus even more certain that A-1 was the Caudron G.III in the photo. My knowledge about early Colombian aviation is close to zero, so everything else is pure guesswork from my side. No idea how the EMA's Caudrons were marked, if A-1 was one of them or a direct import from somewhere (France?) Cheers Stig |
