Go 242 plane loss -
Hello,
Just newly registrated in here after quite a while of reading previously, wonderfull forum for sure. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing so much info with us. Now towards my question, i am a Go 242 glider fan and im after the search of the fate (or more information) of the following Go 242 attached towards the 2. (Go.) / VK (S) 2. The searched Go was active in the Mediteranian: Go 242 (BS + XC) Transportflight starting base: Lecce Went down in the Sea on: Planquadrat 9713 Date: 24.07.1942 Flewn km. untill that point: 455 km. Can anyone confirm this loss and possible give more info on the load this Go carried + as wel iff the crew was recorded as a loss? Thanks in advance, Ruben |

Re: Go 242 plane loss -
The Luft.Q.M's list shows that on 24-7-42 Go 242 w.n. 584 of Verb.Kdo(S) 4 made a Notlandung auf See in Pl.Qu. 13/97/12 with the crew uninjured (no names given). The Flight is shown as 'H' (Heimat) rather that 'F' (Feindflug) so I assume it was returning after a previous operation,

Re: Go 242 plane loss -
Hi Brian,
Thank you very much for the information. The crewmembers of that Go 242 where: * Ogefr. Bernhard * Gefr. Konrad Both rescued as far as i know by a Do 24 on the very same day at approx. 18.15 Hours. That does mean that this crew was in the water from 08.39 in the morning. The Do 24 did bear the marking: GM - IL and landed at Syrakusa. * Anyone a idea to wich unit this rescuing Do did belong? * Anotehr source does state that alone in july 1942 3 Go's did got lost in the meditereanian sea? Can this be confirmed with concrete data, etc? Thanks in advance, |

Re: Go 242 plane loss -
Hi Ruben,
In addition to 584 - on 17-7-42 w.n 580 ditched with crew rescued and on 18-7-42 6080 ditched crew rescued. On 22nd August 0589 ditched with again crew rescued. I suppose these Gliders ditched well and the presence of a tow aircraft overhead helped the Seenotdienst, Regards Brian bines |

Re: Go 242 plane loss -
Hi Brian,
Thank you once again for this info, it seems that with these 4 Go's that went down this Go 242 unit had a rather bad month. Does the List show details on the losses on Go's for the unit: 2. Go./VK(S) 2 ? The Go's did fly from June 1942 towards November 1942 the Afrika-Korps. Would it take much time or great effort to list all Go 242's losses in the Afrika theatre of war for this period? Iff i can do something in return?, please feel free to ask. Cordial greetings, Ruben |

Brian
Just out of curiosity, the WNr 6080 seems a bit out of place. Sure it isn't WNr 0680? Cheers STig |

Re: Go 242 plane loss -
Stig,
You are likely to be correct, I checked the QM's list again and it does say 6080 perhaps an error at the time, Brian |
