Could German combat planes fly on Italian fuel (question of octane rating)?
Thanks in advance. Chris |

Re: Italian fuel
Yes. I have a receipt given to a Ju 88 crew of 4./KG 51 for 1147 ltrs of fuel uplifted at Linate on 4 June 1940 stating "Benzina Intava 87 no"

Re: Italian fuel
I'd say it depends on the a/c type, most German a/c used B4 fuel, so 87 octane was ok but BMW 801 D-2 and later 801s needed C3 fuel which was at first something like 94/115 fuel and later 95-96/125-130 fuel, so e.g. Fw 190 As from A-3 onwards and 190 Fs needed better than 87 octane fuel. I don't know if there was Italian "C3 quality" fuel.
