Water tower on Luftwaffe airfield in France
Hi all,
attached is a picture of a water tower (still under construction?) on a Luftwaffe airfield in France used by KG 54 late 1940 or early 1941. Unfortunately the Ju 88 in the original picture has all markings blackened out for night time bombing of Britain so the Gruppe or Staffel can not be identified. Does anyone know on which airfield the water tower was placed? Thanks in advance, Rudi. Last edited by RudiS; 5th May 2013 at 08:05. |

Possibly Avord
Hi Rudi,
Avord had a water tower like this. I think you should check with Frédéric Hénoff (also a member of this forum), he's an expert on Avord. Frédéric, s'il vous plait?! Regards, Marcel |

Re: Water tower on Luftwaffe airfield in France
Hello Rudi,
To my knowledge it is not Avord. The wood is much denser close to the water tower at Avord and on this airfield it is improbable to be able to take picture of a plane with the water tower so close in background. Additionally I don’t have the memory of this unit on this airfield. At the mentioned period the KG 54 could be in Evreux-Fauville or Saint-Andre de l’Eure (16 mi. SE of Evreux) Two links to see the plans of these airfields.(in pdf): http://www2.stba.aviation-civile.gou...vreux1_pdf.pdf http://www2.stba.aviation-civile.gou...andre1_pdf.pdf Hope this help. Best regards from France. Frederic [Bonjour Marcel ! KG 66 goes well? ;o)] |

Re: Water tower on Luftwaffe airfield in France
In my photo book of French airplanes captured by the Germans in May-June 1940, there is a photo of a similar water tower on page 24, centre. It is identified as located on Vertain airfield.

They are quite a common sight in Northern France: you see them from the London–Paris Eurostar at least.

Re: Water tower on Luftwaffe airfield in France
Thanks everyone for your inputs. It's very much appreciated.
A special thanks to Frederic for the maps of Evreux & St André airfields. I think it might be St André since there is a water tower (chateau d'eau) just to the east of one of the runways. Regards, Rudi. |
