A few more images of destroyed Axis aircraft, no details or locations :(

Still plugging my way through a mountain of images and have found a few more of Axis aircraft destroyed on the ground (some look like collections or a graveyard of destroyed aircraft). One that struck me was a Catalina in Axis markings?

(Edit - Catalina is actually a 323.....how embarrassed am I !!)

The "Catalina" is in truth a Me 323. Check the engines on both wings.
Looks a He 59 on the last photo.

"Looks like a He 59 in the last photo" Try a Liore-et-Olivier LeO H-258.

Col

Few individuals, unfortunately, are interested in French aircraft so I even if I know your skills I am still impressed.

But, how can you actually see it is a LeO 258 (no H, reason is I believe it began life without floats) and not a H-257B? They were exactly the same and their only difference, when on floats, was their engines. Inline Hispanos for the 258 and Gnome-Rhone radials for the H-257B. By Sep 1940 the remaining eight 258s were stored either at Berre or Karouba, Tunisia. Unfortunately I don't know their exact disposition in Nov 1942. All were reportedly destroyed by the Italians (at Berre) or by Allied bombing (Karouba)

Unfortunately the H-257B survived in even greater number, many transferred to Armée de l'Air and I have again no disposition of them in late 1942. Many had been stored at Karouba as well.

Pity the photo is so mediocre....

Cheers
Stig

Stig,

I only had a rudimentary general arrangement drawing of the aircraft, it was described as a Liore-et-Olivier Leo H-258. It is not really my territory. I later unpacked William Green's Warplanes of the Second World War Floatplanes Volume Six, pp.40-2, (Macdonald & Co.,1962!). I can now see, that without the engines, it is very difficult to differentiate between the models.

Col.

No worries Col

You did great getting to where you are right now. Amazing little books those done by Bill Green. Without ever meeting Mr Green I have to say he single handedly turned my interest into aviation history and spotting at the same time. Quite a feat....

Statistically the odds favour the aircraft we are looking at to be a H-257B but when it comes to reality I have no idea, since then you can do what you like with the statistics.

Anyway Col, well done! I am still impressed!!

Cheers
Stig

Re: A few more images of destroyed Axis aircraft, no details or locations :(

Thanks for posting those shots, Mysticpuma:

Photos "325th FG staff clamber over a Ju-52 graveyard in an unknown location.jpg" and "Stockpile of damaged axis aircraft lay on the ground with a DC-3, B-17 and B-25 behind them - 2.jpg" is taken at el-Aouina airfield, Tunis, after 8 May 1943.

Photos "Destroyed Ju-88 is pictured with a P-47 of the 318th FS #57 in the background.jpg" and "Shot up axis aircraft lays on the ground with tents behind unknown location.jpg" seems to be one of the discarded II./KG 30 Ju 88 hulks at Foggia-Tortorella airfield, from September 1943 onwards.

Your Me 109 shot remains a mystery, probably one of the dozens left behind around Tunis in May 1943.

Thanks again for those fine pictures
Marc
