Japanese Army Aviation on Truk February 1944

Does anyone have any information on whether there were any Ki-43 Oscars on Truk during the 16-17 February strikes.

I have combat reports from the carriers that have Oscar claims but in two of the books I have that mention the raid they place the defense solely on the Zero. Given the USN Pilots misidentifying meany aircraft during the Philippines actions I was curious if this could be the case on Truk.

Any help would be appreciated,

Ben.

There was misidentification of Zeros as Oscars, and vice versa, throughout the war. And it was an issue not restricted to USN flyers.

I don't believe any JAAF fighter units were ever based at Truk, although JAAF a/c staged there enroute to Rabaul.

Cheers,

Bruce

A word search for Truk in Hata, Izawa and Shore's book on Japanese Army Air Force Units supports Bruce's info. Ki-43's were only there en route to somewhere else. The last date mentioned is April 1943.

Concur with Bruce; "There was misidentification of Zeros as Oscars, and vice versa, throughout the war. And it was an issue not restricted to USN flyers."

Extremely similar in appearance even at close range.
