Attack on Home Fleet 6 April 1940

Hi,

On the 9 April 1940 a formation of Ju88s and He111s atacked elements of the Home Fleet south of the Orkneys. They may have been escorting a couple of convoys at the time.

6 Sea Gladiators from 804 Sqn carried out an interception on these aircraft. Lt Cdr Cockburn claimed one He111 shot down while another three pilots claimed another between them.

One Sea Gladiator crashed on landing back at base, possibly due to damaged received during the combat.

Would anyone know where these Ju88s and He111s came from? Were there two losses? If so does anyone have details of these aircraft and crews?

I know this may be detailed in 'Fledgling Eagles' but my copy is unavailable at the moment.

Thanks for your help.

Alex

Odd! What I have is two ac from II/KG 26 were lost on the evening of 8 Aprilto 43 Sqn but the FAA were involved in the attack on 10 April which included KGr 100, 3(F)/OBdL (latter lost a He 111 to 43 Sqn) then that evening KG 26 and KG 30 made another attack which cost the Gr Kdr of I/KG 26, another ac from II/KG 26 and 2 Ju 88s to Flak. What we have is a confusion over dates. The attack that cost the life of Hptm Mahrenholtz was over Norway
