Sgt J. A. U. Quitzow, RAF 122724
I'm looking for more information about Sgt J Quitzow who was a gunner aboard a Maryland AH281 from 39 Squadron based in Fuka, Egypt. His plane was forced to land on May 8, 1941, on the southern tip of the Peloponnese, where the crew was captured.
Quitzow later escaped from the POW camp in Salonika and got back to Egypt via Turkey. I have a photo of him aboard the freighter Destro which transported him and about 10 other escaped POWs (British, Australian and Kiwis) from Iskanderon in Turkey to Port Said in September/October 1941. He is mentioned here: https://discovery.nationalarchives.g...ls/r/C16755701 and mentioned in the book Air War for Yugoslavia Greece and Crete 1940-41 by Christopher Shores and Brian Cull. I would have thought that with a surname that distinctive, he'd be easy to trace. But not so. thanks |

Have you tried one of the genealogy sites such as ancestry.com or findmypast?

Not yet, Dave. That was my next port of call. I was hoping to tap the hive mind of this forum first for some short cuts.
Thanks, Dave! Was that from a genealogy site? |

My partner found a couple of unusual names on her family tree and there proved to be people out there who were into researching them, so you may be in luck.

Thanks, Nick! I did get a response from a lady in the US who had an uncle with the same name. She's checking with her father to confirm the ID. Now I've just got to hope he left some record of his escape from Greece in 1941 to solve my mystery.
