Oblt Herbert Schmid
Hello all,
I am searching a (possibly) missing flight log page of the Flugbuch from Oblt. Herbert Schmid (NJG 2, NJG 3), the pilot who fled to Dyce/Scotland with his crew and valuable Ju88 nightfighter in May 1943. Thanks to a respected and most helpful TOCH member I have several copies, containing the flights between June 1940-September 1942, but the page with flights in November/December 1941 is missing. The reason for this request: it might be that Schmid has been on Venlo airfield in the last weeks of 1941, as he was frequently been there in February, March and April 1942... Would love to hear from you, best regards, Marcel Hogenhuis

Re: Oblt Herbert Schmid
If hope you don't mind, but I'm wondering if anyone has new, additional details pertaining to one of the most fascinating events of the war.
Simply said: a motion picture needs to be made about ALL of this... Bronc |

I don't hope so - almost everything written so far about this incident is wrong

Re: Oblt Herbert Schmid
I am working on a book about Schmid. There are many things that has been told in the past that are pure nonsens. Some people have used the SOE cover up story as fact. Others have written pure fiction - that Schmid worked for the British intelligence before his defection, that the British new that Schmid was defecting, that he twice had landed in England to deliver a package, that his father worked for Stresemann.
Most people have not bothered to find the facts about - his time with Legion Condor - his air battles as a night fighter pilot - the reason why he defected - the story behind his two crewmembers . his confrontation with his Staffelkapitän . his work for the British after he landed in England - the planning and preparation before the defection etc etc |

Hi Carsten,
A pleasure to meet you in Hetschbach and your presentation about the IV./NJG3 in Denmark and Herbert Schmid was superb! Count me in when your book is published! Best regards, Marcel |
