JU88 Lost October 1940

Gents,

Trying to establish the I.D of a JU88 reported to have been shot down on October 30th 1940 by a Bristol Blenheim of No.40 Squadron. The Wyton ORB records the encounter and reports that the crew were all captured.

Can anyone ID or help with this encounter?

TIA

Steve

Re: JU88 Lost October 1940

Steve I had this as two men baled out at Sutton Bridge and the a/c crash landed at Priggs yard, Middle Fen. Stuntly by Ely at 1450hrs. Other researchers has the aircraft as being intercepted by Blue Section of No.1 Sqd. did the Blenheim get in after the Junkers had already been hit ?

Re: JU88 Lost October 1940

Hi Brian,

The station records report the following:

"The enemy aircraft was engaged with both the front and rear guns, and was seen to be hit in the port wing and fuselage. Black smoke was coming from one of the engines, but the enemy was lost to sight in the mist".

There is no mention of any other aircraft, perhaps the damaged the JU88 was picked off by Blue Section No.1 Squadron. Do they mention the JU88 having a smoking engine ?

Regards

Steve

Re: JU88 Lost October 1940

Hi Steve, afraid I have no more on the No.1 Sqd. connection. The GQM lists also show a Ju88 of StabIII/LG1 lost at Orleans on the 30th. due to Brennsfoffmangel, crew baled out safe, no mention of enemy action though,
