Bomb Division, Bomb Wing / Air Division, Combat Bombardment Wing

Dear gents,

perhaps anyone can help me.

on which date were changed the designation
" Bomb(ardment) Division / (Combat ?) Bomb(ardment) Wing" to
"Air Division / Combat Bombardment Wing" ?
I know in 1944 the first designation was used and later from Jan 1945 the second.

Thanks,
Kaczmarek

"Bomb(ardment) Division" were redesignated "Air Division" on 19 December 1944.

"Bomb(ardment) Wing" were redesignated "Combat Bombardment Wing" in August 1943.

There may have been some delay in application by all units in the Eighth Air Force but that give you a good idea of the thing.

A good share of my sources mention December 1944 but I will stand corrected if you can back this claim.

Again, that took time to reach all units, but most were redesignated by Mid-September 1943.

13 SEP 1943 :
1st BW ---> 1st BD
2nd BW ---> 2nd BD
4th BW ---> 3rd BD
Provisional CBWs ----> CBWs (intermediate level structures, around 3 BGs made a CBW)
