What happened to Lt. Günther Scheel (3./JG 54) ?
He collided with his 71st victim (a Yak-9) on 16 July 1943 over Bolkhov.
Reported as missing. However, he was seen in a camp at Ielaguba in 1946 and in an hospital at Solny in 1948. Reported as missing ever since. He joined 3./JG 54 in April 1943 and was brought down three months later, claiming no less than 71 "kills" in 70 operational sorties! He received many awards, including the Ritterkreuz, posthumously. |

Re: What happened to Lt. Günther Scheel (3./JG 54) ?
Hello everyone,
Around the collision are uncertainties, which version is correct, please? 1/ Lt. Scheel when shooting Yak-9 got too close and crashed into it. 2/ An unknown Soviet pilot crashed into it intentionally or inadvertently. 3/ In a dogfight they both collided. Thank you for answer and have a nice day. |
