Do217 Yorkshire crash site location

I am planning to walk out to the crash site later this year of a DO217 U5+AK from 2/KG2. It crashed on Wheeldale Moor near Goatland, England on 17th December1942.
Looking ona map the moor looks a big place ! does anyone have a map reference or know the exact location?

Hi Jon,
Try contacting Bill Norman on this board, this is in his area of interest, and he lives in the area, he may be able to help.
Regards
Joe

Jon, haven't got a map ref for you - however, a clue appears in 'The Blitz Now and then' Vol 3 (p189) Ed. Winston Ramsey. Extract on the incident reads :

'December 17-18 Night : 2/KG2 Dornier Do217E-4 [4348]. Flew into hillside at RAVENSTONES, Wheeldale Moor, near Pickering, Yorks 10pm. Crew (listed) - all killed. Aircraft U5+AK disintegrated.'

Footnote reads : 'Owing to the remote nature of the crashsite, the wreck was not found for two days and many pieces were left in situ but these have mostly been removed in recent years.'

Hope the vague clue helps. Sugg check if 'Ravenstones' appears on OS map ? Good luck with hunt - be interested to hear what you dig up !

Jon, 'Ravenstones' appears Ordinance Survey map ref SE7899. The crew, Fw. W. Stoll, Obergefr H. Roschner, Obergefr G Wicht, and Obergefr F Armann all buried at Thornaby on Tees Cemetary. Doesn't look like they were re-interred at Cannock Chase.

Re: DO217 Yorkshire crash site location

Thanks for the responses, i know that in the 1970's large bits of it were still scattered about the crash site so it will be worth the hike.
Thanks again

Jon
