North Africa P-38s
I have read that the four numbers painted on the nose of NA P-38s early in the war are not the serial number but the constructor's number. Is this the same as the manufacturer serial number? Is there a way to determine an aircraft's constructor's number.

This is a Fifteenth AF Lockheed-built J-15 42-104246.
246 is last 3 of serial. 3080 is Lockheed's construction number. 765 is batch number on the production line. Not usually this clear especially on camouflage. 42-103979 to 42-104428 were Lockheed P-38J-15-LO, MSN 2813-3262.
Serial to MSN.
