Dieppe raid

Hello all,
there are several films releted to Dieppe operations on IWM site.
Use allocated title : RAF OPERATIONS IN SUPPORT OF THE DIEPPE RAID

There are nice shots of 41 Sqn, 501 Sqn, 118 Sgn Spitfires and 43 Sqn, 87 Sqn Hurricanes among many others.

examples:

Re: Dieppe raid

Nice videos, thanks David.
But they raise a question for me - photos and profiles of some Dieppe Spitfires I have show invasion stripes on the nose, but none of the fighters in the 4 videos have stripes. Was it that only some squadrons painted them on?
If so, can someone tell me which? Did they only carry them for a short time?
Peter

Re: Dieppe raid

Could just be stock footage of the a/c and not taken during the raid.

Thanks for the links

Re: Dieppe raid

Dave,

Thanks for sharing those great film links.

Peter,

Although those nose stripes had been reported in some sources to have been applied for the Dieppe operation, it has now been well established that they where applied for the pre-Dieppe exercise known as Operation Rutter which took part in July 1942. The stripes were removed prior to Dieppe.

Poop. So much for my planned "Dieppe" striped Spitfire.
So the stripes were only there for what - the first week of July?
Cheers
Peter
