US claim location system

Dear gentlemen,
does anybody know where Square Y-9520 is located referring to a claim by a 111 Rec. Squadron fighter pilot of the USAAF?

Thanks in advance!

Michael

Re: US claim location system

That is going to depend on which "map" the square is located. The system is explained here: http://www.echodelta.net/mbs/eng-overview.php

But several of the maps have a "Y" location. wY9520 (on the French Lambert Zone 2 map) is near Grenobel, for example. But other maps also have a "Y9520" location. bY9520 on the French Lambert zone 3 map is in the sea south of Toulon.

Re: US claim location system

This is a claim on April 30, 1945 at 0930 hours for a Ju 88 destroyed, by 2nd Lt Frank D Bell. On April 16 the 111th TRS made claims SE of Ulm and in the Nurnburg area. Earlier claims in April were at Ingolstadt, Rothenburg and Haguenau. Spellings are based on the mission reports, and can be wrong. So it will be necessary to determine the proper map of Germany in order to pin down Y-9520. My copies of the mission reports are not accessible at the moment; they may indicate the map being referenced.

Enjoy!

Frank.

Good morning Frank !

Your location (w)Y-9520 may be hosted in the Nord de Guerre grid. If so, the location is about 5 km South of Holzkirchen, which is located South of Munich, Germany.

Best wishes !

Re: US claim location system

Thank you gentlemen,
excellent, that was exactly I was looking for. The allied system never drew my attention before, but in this case I wanted to exclude a possibility in connection with the downing of Oblt. Günther Bertram of 3./NJG.100 on 30.04.45. Though there are questionmarks if his Ju 88 G-6 (W7+AM) was shot down at all (mentioned as "blown up" in the LEMB Ju.88 list) it would have been over northern Germany (not in the area of operation of USAAF units and far off from the 111th TacRecSq. claim ) and maybe near the last base of the Staffel at Lübeck-Blankensee. There is a possibility, that the Ju.88 might have fallen to a 402 Sq. RCAF Spitfire ( claims around 1130 and 1525) I´m still investigating. Maybe someone of you knows more about it...

Cheers

Michael
