SG 10 IL-2 victory
Hi Folks,
On January 23, 1945 at 14:28 local time, three IL-2s of 5 VA, 12 GvShAD, 187 GvShAP attacked the Buda Royal Palace in Budapest, Hungary: IL-2, No.’99’ – Makarov - Beloshitski IL-2, No.’55’ – Turapin - Shabanov IL-2, No.’83’ – Ribalchenko – Udalov (2 KIA) The targets were the No.54 and 57 objects (government buildings). Due to the bad winter weather the soviets did not expect fighter attack, so this time they had no fighter escort. (This was a big mistake.) During their attack from 1300 to 500 m, Ribalchenko’s IL-2 fell behind his formation with about 800 m. Over the ‘Vienna-Gate’ of the palace, 4 Fw 190s jumped on the IL-2s. They downed IL-2, S/N: 10841, AM-38F engine No.: 257716, markings: white ‘83’ with the Gv.Lt. Vladimir Ivanovich Ribalchenko - Vladimir Alexeevich Udalov crew. Everything happened in just a few seconds. Due to the low altitude and the populated area, they had no chance to survive. Ribalchenko’s IL-2 rolled over and with a smoking trail crashed into the side of the castle hill. Leader's gunner, Mihail Matveevich Belositski downed one of the Fw 190s, which also crashed in the same area soon afterwards. This downed Fw 190 could be Fw 190F-8, W.Nr.: 583622, black '6' of 2./SG 10, piloted by Uffz. Fritz Wachtmann, who went missing over Budapest this day. If so, then Ribalchenko’s plane was downed by an SG 10 pilot. Who shot them down????? Gabor Last edited by HGabor; 12th July 2021 at 16:34. |

Re: SG 10 IL-2 victory
From 5 VA, 12 GvShAD, 188 GvShAP Gv.St.Lt. Mihail Stepanovich Osipenko (flying a single weather recce. mission over the city) reported 4 Fw 190s between 11:00 - 11:20 local over Buda.
5 IL-2s of 188 GvShAP (Osipenko, Dolgih, Osetrov, Mayorov, Ivanishev) also reported a patrolling Fw 190-pair over Northern part of Buda between 15:38 - 16:15 local time. Since Fw 190 patrols were reported over the city, it is a mystery, why soviet fighter escort was not present during the IL-2 attacks. Certainly if Ribalchenko's plane was downed by Uffz. Fritz Wachtmann, who was also shot down and killed by the gunners of the other IL-2s, later he could not claim his legitimate IL-2 victory and therefore he was not credited. During the day many Luftwaffe sorties over Budapest, several DFS 230 gliders delivered supplies to their encircled ground forces. Some, eg. Uffz. Zieger Eberhard in DFS 230, W.Nr.227470 couldn't make it to Budapest and landed at Vanyola, etc. Gabor |

Re: SG 10 IL-2 victory
Gv.Ml.Lt. Ivan Mihailovich Bichkov's IL-2m3, S/N: 18833115 (5 VA, 7 GvShAD, 131 GvShAP, 3rd Sq.) was also damaged by fighters over Budapest on January 23, 1945 (15 hits in fuselage, stabilizer, ailerons). No AC loss reported. Dmitrii Andreevich Dyachenko (5 VA, 7 GvShAD, 131 GvShAP, 3rd Sq.) in IL-2m3, S/N: 12523 claimed a Bf 109 at Sas (Eagle)-hill, 259. point in Buda. Their plane was slightly damaged, but not lost in the dogfight.
