unknown B17 crash at Lower Austria
Attached another picture of an aircraft crash. It shows a B17. The markings of the tail shows "23343" and "G". Maybe someone knows details? Thanks,
Kurtl |

Re: unknown B17 crash at Lower Austria
A possibility is the B-17 42-30343 (tail number should be 230343) of 342nd BS, 97th BG, 15th Air Force that was lost on 2 April 1944. One of the targets of the 15th AF was Steyr in Austria.

Re: unknown B17 crash at Lower Austria
It’s a 96th BG A/C
Crashed at Lèrouville / Sampigny (F-55200) shot down by fighter 14/10/1943 The serial is most probably # 42-3348 337th BS AW-G “Dotie J III” 2nd Lt Bye Raymond F. Quite far from Austria !! are you sure of the crash place ? Regards Phil |

Re: unknown B17 crash at Lower Austria
Hi,
Certainly a 96th BG a/c of the 8th AAF. With a/c in Squadron letter "G". With what I have The only other mark that I can see is that the tail unit is slightly darker in colour, I can see NO numbers on the tail at all. Start from there, go through each Squadron in that 96th Bomber Group and find all that crashed, were shot down or lost that had the letter "G", then find which of those a/c fell in Austria (?)Then you will have the answer. I agree with Paul. The serial number 42-3343 was to see the war out. While 42-30343 did go down in Austria, she was a 99th and then 97th BG a/c so would not be in 8th AF markings. 42-3348 went down as Paul said, in France. Alex |

Re: unknown B17 crash at Lower Austria
Thanks to all who are helping.
I have a larger version of the picture but could not post it in the forum. There you can read the number. The first one, the "2" is most clearly visible. I am sure about the other ones too. Only the last one could be a "3" or "8". So the serial is "23343" or "23348". It looks more as an "8". But that would mean France. What means the "C" and "G" on the tail? Regards, Kurtl |

Re: unknown B17 crash at Lower Austria
Kurt - Square on tail means 3d Bomb Division 8th Air Force , England
C inside Square is for 96th BG. Snetterton , England G is the B - 17s Identification / Call Letter AW - 337th Sq. Would have had AW G on Fuselage G on tail below Serial # Mike |
