Re: JG 51 victories (Part 2)

Michel, the 09:03 is the problem, as Prien’s JFV 15/I has the only time within the hour they were attacked. I have seen mistakes listed in both sources. There is 50 minutes off in the time of attack for 07:05 listed in Prien’s listings. In Tony Woods list it has no location or unintelligible. Then you go to Prien’s books and they have locations. Then again in Prien’s books there is PlQu. numbers that are off from Tony Woods list but TW has the correct area. Some times the tedious looking at numbers or names over and over again can lead to mistakes.

Re: JG 51 victories (Part 2)

This claim will show a difference between Tony Woods list and Prien’s JFV 15/I.

24 March 1944
10:16 - 11:45 (M) two Il-2 from 71 GShAP made an assault in the area of Kovel. They were attacked by 4 Fw 190. Il-2 flown by Lt. Stribkov and gunner Serzhant Polyakov did not return from the mission. (Journal of Combat Operations of the 6 VA BelF March - April 1944 TsAMO F:336, O: 0005220, D: 0088, L. 1 page 15)

Obfw Anton Hafner Stabsstaffel/JG 51 Il-2 (133) 09:00 Tony Woods 42679 and JFV 25 Ost/42879 Tiefflug. The Tony Woods PlQu is at Kovel, while JFV is to the south of Kovel.

Re: JG 51 victories (Part 2)

23 June 1944
In the period 14:45 - 15:20 (M) 1 La-5, 3 Yak-7 - senior group of Mayor Spiridenko of 172 IAP - direst close escort for combat operations of 8 Il-2 233 ShAD, operating in the area of Sofenpol’e, Bol. Shchekotovo. In the area of Golovichi, the Shturmovik group stretched out their combat formations, that made it difficult for the fighters to cover. Being at an altitude of 1200 m in the area of Golovichi, due to clouds the Shturmoviks were suddenly attacked by 6 Fw 190. During the same period the Germans attacked one of Yak-7 piloted by Ml. Leytenant Yakutovich and hit the Yak-7 of the wingman Ml. Leytenant Levishchkim. After the period of the German attack, they went by into the clouds and did not make any subsequent attacks. The Yak-7, piloted by Ml. Leytenant Yakutovich fell in the area of the town of Golovichi. The Yak-7, piloted by Ml. Lt. Levishchkim returned to the airfield.

Lt. Walter Wever 3/JG 51 Yak-7 (39) 14:00 PlQu. 35 Ost N, 0896 at 600 m.
3/JG 51 was not flying Fw 190 but Bf 109 at this time. From entry in the 4 VA the Soviet pilots were seeing Fw 190 in most of their encounters.

Re: JG 51 victories (Part 2)

Michael

Sorry to be a pain here, but your story has some strange bits and pieces.

a) You say the Yak-7 of Yakutovich was attacked but his wingman was hit instead.
Yet when the final counting was done Yakutovich was the one that went down while his wingman returned to base.
Makes no sense to me.

b) You spell the name of the wingman in two different ways. Is it Levishchkim or Levitskim?

Cheers
Stig

Re: JG 51 victories (Part 2)

Stig,. Yakutovich was attacked but his wingman was also hit and returned to base. As you can see that they were at 1200 m but Wever chased him down to 600 m to finish. Many of these reports are faded or very dark. Changed the name so both are match on the post. You will not find Yakutovich’s name in the OBD memorial, so he probably returned later to his unit.

Re: JG 51 victories (Part 2)

Thanks Michael for the clarification.

Since you don't say this above, I was interested in what exactly happened.

Perhaps someone else knows which spelling is correct?

Cheers
Stig

Hi Michael,
On 4 VA's Loss Report from 29.07.1944,
Mld. Lt. Aleksey Efremovich Yakutovich, was killed in aerial combat against enemy fighters, in the Dlinopol'e area.

Re: JG 51 victories (Part 2)

Hi, a year ago, I published the book about the Operations Diary of the 4th Spanish Expeditionary Squadron, which was integrated in the JG-51. In the book you can read in detail, all the shoot downs of the Squadron.
Best regards

Antonio Duarte.
